SAMPLE SCENE 3: Narrative

...

...

What went well:
  • We were quick and efficient with shooting

Things to improve:
  • Directing the cast to be more natural
  • Cinematography needs to be less shaky
  • Shoot for longer periods to avoid awkward cuts
  • Have a less linear narrative
  • Look for natural shapes for potential layering
  • Look at shots with a more critical eye

Reflection:
  • We will probably change narrative to be less linear
  • Learnt from mistakes and hopefully prepare better for the next shoot
  • Need to have camera rolling to get the more natural shots

Audience Feedback:

SAMPLE SCENE 2: Performance

...

...

What went well:

  • Quickly get many shots, cast were very cooperative
  • Have good variety of static and dynamic shots
Things to improve:

  • Look at the shots with a more critical eye
  • Have more shots of every single instrument on the drum kit
  • Have drummer be more precise and energetic
  • Get go pro POV shots
    • Especially Guitar and Bass
  • Spend more time to get a larger variety of shots
  • Have singer be more energetic

Reflection:

  • Re shoot and spend more time in general on every aspect
  • Plan better to know exactly which shots to take
Audience Feedback:

  • Have band coming in on stage and setup "behind the scenes"
  • Busking implemented in to narrative?

GENRE CONVENTIONS: YouTube Playlist with Sample Videos

...

...

This playlist contains a range from older Archetypes of Indie alongside the modern day Indie music videos.
There is also a music video from Welshly Arms

PODCAST 4: Idea + Research Update

...
...

Additional Points we didn't mention:
  • Created a playlist of indie music videos for analysis
  • Binary opposite lesbians:
    • Butch
    • "Lip-stick" feminine

In this podcast we talk about:
  • Genre research still in progress
    • Iconic acts/inde archetypes
      • Joy Division
      • Sisters of Mercy
      • Pixies
      • Depeche Mode
      • Oasis
    • from this we got ideas for:
      • costume
      • attitude
      • aesthetic of video (colour correction, B+W, low key lighting, handheld
  • Idea update: sims perhaps not feasible - if not use new FCPX cartoon effect
  • Production schedule update
    • New shoot
    • update on clothing
    • prop lists

NARRATIVE: Costume and Props

Costume:

Partner 1:
  • Short hair
  • Coloured hair
  • Zipped up dark hoodie
  • Tight slightly ripped blue jeans
  • no bust
Partner 2:
  • Long hair
  • Nose ring
  • Slight hair colour
  • Unbuttoned Checkered Shirt/jacket rolled up sleeves
  • Beanie
  • black tank top beneath shirt
  • Black skinny jeans
This was our first idea. However casting was very difficult so we have changed the couple to be heterosexual.

Partner 1 (Girl):
  • Long wavy hair
  • White Beanie
  • Long checkered scarf
  • Skinny dark blue jeans
  • "Fluffy" Boots
  • Handbag
  • Trench Coat or Light coloured winter jacket
Partner 2 (Guy):
  • Short little bit curly hair
  • Black skinny jeans (maybe ripped?)
  • Brown winter shoes
  • Long sleeve gray shirt
  • Dark jacket
Props:

(JC) IDEA 7: VR/ Video Game Element

This is a great example of convergence, where a fake 80's style 8 bit video game trailer is used as a music video
...
 ...
From this we have had the idea of incorporating video games into our music video:

  • Performance
    • Using characters in game to play instruments
    • Character avatars dressed as band
Can create bands within sims
  • Story
    • Video starts with couple playing video games together
    • Camera "jumps" into tv or computer
      • In game avatars act out narrative of the bad breakup
      • when camera comes back to real life the game is a exact copy of their reality with a bad breakup/relationship
Mise-en-scene:
  • Frames on wall in sims
    • Posters of welshly arms
  • Watching music videos on TV of WA
    • Can i play with madness
    • Welcome to the jungle
Build a environment for our couple

Possible Games:
  • Sims
  • Skyrim
  • Minecraft

Ideas for Audience interaction:
  • Fans can design avatars
  • Competition - winner can be in next video

TARGET AUDIENCE

...

...

IDEA 6: Narrative and Performance Pitch

...
Narrative:
  • A couple (potentially homosexual)
  • Going through a bad breakup and reflecting on the good times together
  • There is a socialist realist aspect to the genre

Performance:

  • Have derelict rundown area
  • 4 piece band
  • Indie style clothing
  • Have Indie performance from the band, not jumpy and happy but a bit more sinister

SAMPLE SCENE

...

...

Smaple scene for our performance shoot:

How we prepared:
  • We borrowed instuments from the music department
  • Had plans for costumes and almost had the full ones for this scene
  • Printed out call sheets and shot lists and lyrics
  • Simon learned the lyrics

What went well:

  • Location scouting had found even ground in the very uneven forest
  • Cast was enthusiastic
  • Moral was high
  • We where efficient and managed to get done on time
What we will improve on/ Changes to next shoot:

  • direct the cast better
  • have better costume prepared
  • make sure cast all come on time
  • better communication with cast
  • Take care for all the framing to avoid things not to be seen

What we learnt:

  • It is hard to gather everyone and be reliant on everyone
  • Transporting props and instruments can be a hassle
  • Lighting outside depends on time of day and weather
  • Shooting needs to be done with multiple camera

Audience feedback:

Things we can do (inspiration from Richard)

  • Flashback black and white
  • Ripping photograph of couple
  • Narrative enigma for band members and narrative
  • Diegetic sound on photograph rip
  • Using singer in narrative style
  • Bring amps and leads
  • Band moves around the area and not all are always in the shot
  • Attach gopro to fret board
  • Drum kit, film maybe inside bas drum to kick stand
  • Cutting to the beat

  • Singer has been shifted to a close by but another location
  • Fancy dress could work well for couple
    • Costume party maybe
  • Ariel shot of drummers
  • Think carefully about colour, props like flower can be the colourful part of frame
  • Shoot behind the scene of directing and band

SHOOT 1: Sample Scene

We have finally begun shooting for our music video.

Pre Production:

Isabel:

  • VANS music sponsorship

Simon:

  • Problematic hair, needs something done to it
  • Should make longer
  • Performance should have little to no smiling
  • Get phones off performers
  • Should remember speaker to play the audio
  • Semiotics of the quote on Simons shirt
    • Cultural capital for quote (Ghandi)
  • Jacket?
Euan
  • Needs tattoos sleeve
  • Emphasise fringe (less gel)

INTERTEXTUALITY Charli XCX - 1999

...

...

...
Steve jobs and the first Mac
...

...
Titanic
...

...
Spice girls - Say You'll be There
...

...
Charlie XCX intertextualizing Rose McGowan is intertextualising  Cher (signifier of a signifier) Baudrillard's simulacra

CULTURAL CAPITAL: Carli XCX seem to be suggesting that if someone was able to understand all the references they would have a higher cultural capital than someone who can't.
USES + GRATIFICATIONS: Its a talking point. Friend groups come together to discuss this offering the education as well as possibly have interaction with one another
RETROMANIA: Simon Reynolds has argued that the ease of access to the past makes the pop culture which was seen to disappear has been brought forward and still is heavily in use today. There is a predominance backwards looking element even though pop culture is seen as present and future.
ALTMAN'S SET OF PLEASURES: There is an "intellectual puzzle" to finding all the intertextuality and references in the music video, as there is a sense of pleasure from understanding the references.
SUB CULTURE: Various elements are put together to create the sub culture of this genre. Clothing, Slang, Way of acting etc. Distinguish between mainstream and subcultural styles.
